CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

For the space of a heartbeat—one which felt endless—Sebastian stared at the empty doorway.

He hadn't intended to hint at wanting something more, something far beyond, what Shana had finally spoken of.

But for her to say she wanted to sleep with him, just to be able to then go back to ignoring him?

He wouldn't allow such a thing.

And yet, when his words had escaped, Sebastian immediately worried she'd flee, out of fear for deepening ties.

Except, it hadn't been fear that flashed in her blue eyes.

Sebastian thought, instead, he'd seen raw pain.

Which didn't make sense.

How could anything he said have hurt her?

Every last part of him craved to chase her. Bring her back—and finish what had been started.

Not that she'd let him.

Instead, he turned to pressing responsibilities.

Stared at Chase.

Right now, Sebastian’s primary duty was defending this city. “You've already sent help to the pub?”

“I have,” Chase replied. “Johanna took a handful of people.”

“What exactly is going on?” Sebastian readied to leave, grabbing numerous blades, and securing them, hidden, from his chest to his boots.

Chase said, “A group of Rogues attacked O'Grady's, after he refused to let them inside.”

“Idiots. The old Irish fox'll keep them busy.”

“From the sounds of it, they were doing fine. But the last report said more Rogues showed up, just as your people were arriving.”

Damn.

Not good.

O'Grady might be powerful. So too were Sebastian's men.

But numbers counted.

If enough Rogues showed up, his people, along with O'Grady's, could be overwhelmed.

Sebastian strapped on his wrist sheaths, specially filled for the current occasion. He'd loaded them both with a dozen different kinds of enchanted blades.

A test, for his next shot at the Rogues.

He needed answers. He needed to figure out everything he could about their dark magics.

Anything to give him and his men an edge in taking the enemy down.

Strapping his longsword to his hip, he stated, “Let's go.”

Chase followed him down the hall, and into the main room of the club. Sebastian called out orders, though his people were already preparing for a fight.

Outside, vampires from his seethe filled multiple vehicles. He followed Chase to the man's pickup, then slid into the passenger seat.

The truck led the caravan out into the street.

Towards O'Grady's.

Sebastian watched the city pass by, his thoughts settling on two main points.

The first was to ensure everyone at the pub remained unharmed. The other was his desire to install some of these Rogues in his dungeon.

The few wolves they’d recently captured hadn’t been of much use. They didn’t know enough about the Rogues to spill any secrets.

According to their Alpha anyway.

The man had promised to lock them up, but claimed innocence of any knowledge over their actions.

Sebastian didn’t quite buy it.

Not fully.

But at least those mutts were off the streets. Unable to harm anyone else.

Still, Sebastian hoped to secure at least one Rogue in his dungeon, and soon.

In minutes they reached the parking lot beside O'Grady's pub.

Magic shimmered near the employee's side door. Waves blasted outward. Chase's truck shivered and shimmied.

The engine coughed.

Died.

They rolled to a stop.

The rest
